Before attempting VCAP certification, you must first obtain a VMware Certified Professional (VCP) certification. VMware currently provides three VCAP tracks: data centre virtualization, end user computing, and cloud computing. There are two certifications available for each track: advanced administrator and advanced designer. There are exams for each track, as well as exams for each certification option. For instance, if an IT professional selects the data centre track and the administrator certification, he must pass that exam in order to become a VCAP-DCA. VCAP-DCA (data centre administrator), VCAP-DCD (data centre designer), VCAP-CIA (cloud administrator), VCAP-CID (cloud designer), VCAP-DTA (desktop administrator), and VCAP-DTD (data centre technician) are the six VCAP certification options (desktop designer).

The VCAP administrator exams include live labs with real-world equipment to validate the user's skills. The VCAP designer exams contain over 100 multiple-choice questions, drag-and-drop items, and a tool for building a design based on a customer scenario.

The Advanced Professional VMware certification recognises professionals who have advanced knowledge of virtualization systems, have mastered the design, deployment, and maintenance of VMware systems, and can create effective enterprise-level virtualization solutions.

VMware Advanced Professional (VCAP) exam vouchers may be used as payment for all VMware advanced level certification exams.
